How to buy your way up in the watch market - from a starter model in collectors to top investment pieces:

  1. Longines Conquest Heritage, with steel black dial automatic with it's box and papers. A good quality starter watch offering vintage looks with modern mechanicals. Looks great, easy to wear and when he is ready to 'trade up' it should hold it's value. PRICE:  £450
  2. Rolex Oyster Precision from the 1950s, with a steel hand, and unusual elongated heart markers for the hours. The first step into Rolex ownership, everyday wearable. As long as he keeps it in good condition, after a year or so he will be in profit. PRICE: £895
  3. An early bumper automatic Omega in 14ct gold in excellent original condition from th e late 1940s. An investment for the future, currently undervalued. Would look great with a smart suit, but it's definately not for digging the garden! PRICE: £1,400
  4. Omega Seamaster 300 (also know as the James Bond watch). A steel automatic divers watch with blue dial. Want him to look like Daniel Craig? This might not do it, but it will make him feel good nonetheless. A great alternative to the Rolex Submariner, which costs twice as much. PRICE: £1,895
  5. Omega Speedmaster Moon, steel hand wound chronograph, 1990s model with an 861 model. The only watch worn on the moon and still used by NASA; what more could he want for Top Trumps bragging rights in the pub? PRICE: £1,995
  6. Heuer Monaco by TAG, steel automatic chronograph. Re-issue of the first automatic chronograph made in 1969, which fits in well with the current fashion for the 1970s - also the perfect present for any man who loves racing cars. PRICE: £1,995
  7. Jaeger Le-Coultre Reverso night and day, steel, hand wound double sided watch. Originally made for Polo players in the 30s, now an iconic quality watch for a gentleman about town. This version has two sides allowing it to show two time zones. PRICE: £3,850
  8. Patek Phillipe Calatrava 3919, 18ct gold hand wound with box and archive papers. The best a man can get! Guarenteed to make him stand out from the crowd, looks are understated yet elegant, also a great investment piece. PRICE: £6,995
